Wakyo (ancient Japanese mirror) is an artistic ware traditionally dedicated to shrines and temples. Wakyo Magic Mirror, simply called as Makyo in Japanese, is one of the traditional Japanese crafts and ancient art originally brought to Japan from China which had developed its own style along with the unique Japanese patterns. The history of Makyo or Magic Mirror is traced back to 300 B.C., but later the magic mirror became a secret symbol of the faith for the Christians (Kakure Kirishitan or Hidden Christian) in Japan during the Edo Period (17th to mid-19th century) when the Christianity was persecuted – as a mirror projects concealed Christian image.

Once this ancient art had disappeared in the Japanese art scene, Ohryu Yamamoto (Akihisa’s grandfather, a Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure 5th class honoree) revived the technique. Now, Akihisa being the only successor of this ancient technique and his family are looking for someone who could learn and succeed this art for the next generations.
